AIUC Raises $40M to Underwrite and Certify AI Agents

The Artificial Intelligence Underwriting Company, known as AIUC, announced a $40 million Series A funding round led by Ribbit Capital and First Harmonic. Founded by CEO Rune Kvist, an early product hire at Anthropic, and COO Rajiv, a former partner at McKinsey and COO at METR, the 20-person startup aims to build confidence infrastructure for frontier AI. The company's core premise is that the primary constraint on AI adoption is no longer capability, but rather the liability, risk, and trust issues that arise when autonomous systems fail.

To address these concerns, the startup has launched AIUC-1, a quarterly-updated standard designed to evaluate agent security, safety, and reliability. Under this framework, AI agents undergo rigorous technical testing every quarter, simulating thousands of scenarios to measure how easily they can be jailbroken, how often they hallucinate, and whether they leak sensitive data. AIUC collaborates with a consortium of risk leaders from Fortune 1000 companies to ensure the standard addresses real-world enterprise anxieties.

Beyond testing, AIUC couples its standards with real insurance policies, allowing conservative insurers to take on some of the operational risk. This dual approach helps startups like Cursor, Harvey, Lovable, and ElevenLabs prove their reliability to risk-averse enterprise clients such as banks and hospitals. Kvist notes that while a pilot program is easy to sell, a full-scale rollout requires passing complex risk assessments that traditional institutions are unequipped to handle.

The founders draw a parallel to historical technology waves like electricity, automobiles, and nuclear energy, where market-led standards and insurance emerged to enable widespread adoption before formal regulation caught up. By offering independent third-party validation and financial backing, AIUC hopes to bridge the trust gap between frontier AI developers and the organizations deploying their models.
