Nextcloud launches desktop app for Euro-Office suite
Nextcloud has launched a desktop application for its Euro-Office productivity suite, giving organizations a sovereign, offline-capable alternative to Microsoft Office.

Nextcloud has introduced a dedicated desktop application for its Euro-Office productivity suite, bridging a major gap in its open-source alternative to Microsoft Office. Previously restricted to web browsers and mobile devices, the new client allows users to edit documents, spreadsheets, and presentations locally before syncing changes online. The software will roll out for Linux, macOS, and Windows operating systems in the coming weeks.
Built on the OnlyOffice codebase, Euro-Office functions as an integrated component within platforms like Nextcloud Hub rather than a standalone suite. The project is backed by a coalition including Nextcloud, Eurostack, Ionos, Office.eu, Proton, and XWiki, with more than 40 individual code contributors, 15 percent of whom are external. It supports Microsoft's OOXML formats alongside OpenDocument Formats like ODT, ODS, and ODP. While adopted by Germany's Deutsche Telekom Security and Turkey's Destek, Forrester analyst Martha Bennett noted that the suite has not yet proven itself at the scale large enterprises require.
The desktop app arrives alongside Nextcloud's Summer 26 platform updates. These include a revamped Nextcloud Teams app featuring shared resource folders and team-owned files that persist even if the creator departs. Administrators also gain new tools for managing team folder storage quotas. Meanwhile, the Nextcloud Text editor now supports version comparisons, footnotes, and inline comments, while the Nextcloud Tables database app introduces relational columns and schema import-export capabilities.
Finally, the platform's integrated AI Assistant has been upgraded to accept image uploads for visual querying, translate text, and retain conversational memory. These features are rounded out by a redesigned global search interface and fluid UI animations. For IT practitioners, these updates collectively transform Nextcloud from a simple cloud storage tool into a highly competitive, self-hosted collaboration environment.
