Former TikTok Execs Launch Superpose AI Photo App
Former TikTok employees have launched Superpose, an iOS camera app that uses artificial intelligence to generate pose suggestions, marking a new push into AI-guided consumer photography.

Founded by former TikTok product manager Melody Chu and engineer Jing Liu, the new iOS application Superpose uses generative AI to help users capture better portrait photos. When a user takes a selfie or a picture of a friend, the app generates four distinct pose suggestions. Users can save these recommendations or use a built-in match-pose feature to align themselves within the camera frame according to the AI's guidance.
The startup has raised $2.2 million in funding from Khosla Ventures, OVTR VC, and the Chinese smartphone and selfie app developer Meitu. Since its launch in July, Superpose has accumulated more than 22,000 downloads, and its users have generated over 190,000 poses. While the app provides five free generations per day, users can purchase additional packs, priced at $2.99 for five generations or $9.99 for 20 generations.
Chu, who previously worked at Meta, Nextdoor, Roblox, and Slack alongside TikTok, conceived the app to solve the common frustration of poorly framed personal photos. Liu brought technical expertise from TikTok's video models and a 3D face-scanning startup. Rather than generating fantastical backgrounds, the founders want to focus on "capturing the lived moment and experience" of real-world photography. The team is currently working to reduce uncanny generations, improve personalization, and integrate real-time coaching directly into the camera viewfinder.
For mobile software developers and AI practitioners, Superpose highlights a shift from pure image generation toward interactive, real-time computer vision coaching. While tech giants like Google and Adobe have introduced framing assistants like Camera Coach, Superpose demonstrates how lightweight generative models can be commercialized directly within consumer camera interfaces.
