Anthropic Merges Claude Cowork Into Chat

Anthropic is combining its standard Claude chat interface with Claude Cowork, its workspace designed for multi-step agent workflows. This merger eliminates the need for users to choose between a standard chat and a Cowork task before starting their work. The unified experience is rolling out first to Pro and Max subscribers over the coming weeks, with Team and Free plans to follow later. Enterprise administrators will receive at least 30 days of notice before the changes are enabled for their organizations.

Alongside the merger, Anthropic is launching Claude Docs and Claude Slides in beta, which join the existing Claude Design tool inside the chat interface. These additions allow practitioners to draft documents, convert them into presentations, and create matching visual assets within the same conversation. Users can edit generated content directly, leave comments for the AI, and manipulate individual visual elements. The resulting files function as persistent artifacts that can be shared via a single link or exported to PowerPoint and PDF formats.

Because Cowork runs tasks in Anthropic's cloud environment, any conversation can now trigger long-running agent tasks that continue executing even after a user closes their laptop or disconnects their device. This background execution applies to sessions started on the web, mobile, or desktop apps. Originally launched as a research preview in January 2026, Cowork's integration also brings Anthropic's full catalog of external connectors directly into regular chat threads. This allows Claude to access authorized services like Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack, HubSpot, QuickBooks, PayPal, Canva, and DocuSign.

For practitioners, this integration transforms Claude from a reactive chatbot into a continuous workspace. Instead of managing separate projects, users can maintain a single conversation thread where Claude gathers information through connectors, drafts weekly reports, incorporates teammate feedback, and generates presentations. Existing Cowork projects, connectors, skills, and scheduled runs will transition to the new interface automatically, preserving previous work while streamlining the overall user experience.
