Meta and OpenAI Drive Massive Data Center Power Demand
As tech giants like Meta and OpenAI transition from simple chatbots to autonomous AI agents, the massive energy demands of these persistent systems are driving an unprecedented data center boom.

The tech industry is shifting from simple chatbot queries to autonomous AI agents, a transition that is dramatically increasing energy consumption and driving a massive data center buildout. Unlike standard search queries, agentic systems run continuously, prompting themselves dozens of times to complete complex tasks. For example, OpenAI recently deployed a swarm of more than 10,000 agents that exchanged 2.7 million messages to solve a complex math problem. This single experiment likely cost tens of millions of dollars in processing power, demonstrating the immense resources required for agentic workflows.
While OpenAI CEO Sam Altman previously compared the water footprint of 38,000 ChatGPT queries to harvesting a single almond, actual agentic usage is far more resource-intensive. Climate scientist Zeke Hausfather calculated that his daily sessions with Anthropic's Claude, which heavily utilize agents, consume more electricity than running two refrigerators. This footprint is poised to scale globally as Meta rolls out Muse, a personal AI agent designed for billions of users. Muse will maintain a dedicated cloud computer for each user even when they are offline, and Meta plans to power its massive Hyperion data center project in Louisiana with 10 natural gas plants to support such workloads.
For AI practitioners and developers, this shift means that optimizing for computational efficiency and environmental impact is becoming as critical as model accuracy. Building agentic workflows requires balancing the autonomy of parallel helper agents against skyrocketing operational costs. While some developers hope to power these data centers using small modular nuclear reactors, no such commercial reactors currently operate in the United States, and only one model has been licensed. Consequently, tech companies are installing natural gas turbines to meet immediate demands, forcing practitioners to confront the reality that their autonomous systems will rely heavily on fossil fuels for the foreseeable future.
