Meta is reportedly working on a new model of smart glasses, codenamed Luna, that completely omits built-in cameras. According to a report from The Information, this hardware adjustment is designed to address persistent consumer anxieties regarding privacy and surveillance. By removing the camera, Meta hopes to appeal to users who are uncomfortable with wearable recording devices but still want hands-free access to digital assistants.

Despite lacking a camera, the Luna glasses will remain highly connected to Meta's artificial intelligence ecosystem. The device will feature six integrated microphones to facilitate voice communication with the company's AI chatbot and Muse, its consumer-focused AI agent. Users will be able to trigger the AI system manually using a dedicated physical button located on the side of the glasses. Meta may officially unveil the new hardware as early as its upcoming Meta Connect developer conference in Menlo Park.

This strategic pivot comes as Meta's hardware division, Reality Labs, continues to face steep financial challenges. The division reported massive losses in its April earnings statement, highlighting the difficulty of making wearable technology profitable.
